Nicole Kidman has received the highest honour in the film industry – becoming the first Australian to do so.
The actress is set to be awarded the 49th American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, at a gala tribute in Los Angeles in June 2023.
Kidman, 55, reacted to the news on Instagram, sharing a graphic from the American Film Institute (AFI) announcing the news.
“What an honour! Thank you to @americanfilminstitute and to all who have been a part of this journey,” she said on Thursday.
“Looking forward to seeing you in June.”
Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a statement: “Nicole Kidman has enchanted audiences for decades with the daring of her artistry and the glamour of a screen icon.
“She is a force both brave in her choices and bold in each performance.”
The award is the “highest honour for a film career” and its previous recipients include Orson Welles, Bette Davis and Alfred Hitchcock.
Kidman rose to fame in the 1989 film Dead Calm and soon went on to star alongside Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder the following year.
The star’s best-known roles include Moulin Rouge, Lion, The Hours, Australia and the TV series Big Little Lies.
She has been nominated for five Academy Awards and won Best Actress in 2003 for the film The Hours.
Fans have reacted to the exciting news, proclaiming she is “so deserving of this award”.
“She’s a fabulous deep brilliant person and actress, I love her body of work,” one tweeted.
“What a fantastic choice. So deserving. Can’t wait to see the tributes,” another said.
The Morning Show entertainment reporter Peter Ford remarked on the news on Thursday.
“When you look at her body of work it is so extraordinary,” he said.
“Not everything has been commercially successful because, like a true artist, she wants to challenge herself at times.
“Sometimes she ends up in things people don’t really want to go and see, sometimes she’s not even brilliant in things.
“But she’s out there testing herself and challenging herself all the time.
“So that is a great achievement.”News Source: 7 News
